Olivar Cromwell, 1656

1656, Oliver Cromwell Gold Broad, Spink 3225. The Cromwell Broad of twenty shillings was the forerunner of the gold guinea and the sovereign. Designed by Thomas Simon and struck by Peter Blondeau prior to his return to France in 1656. Although the broad is now usually encountered in the higher grades a Mr Pinkerton writing at the time observed that many of these pieces were so worn as to be almost flat. This piece displays much of the original matt finish to the facial features of Oliver Cromwell. Has to be good value for money at this price. CC Ref # EMG-45, gVF SOLD

King Charles II, 1660 to 1685

1662, King Charles II, pattern milled Broad. Laureate bust left. Rv. Crowned shield, dividing date above, legend reads - FLORENT CONCORDIA REGNA. Krause Pn 32. CC Ref # EMG-53. Certified AU 55. Rare.

1675, King Charles II, gold 5 guineas. First laureate bust right with elephant below. Rv. Crowned cruciform shields with sceptres in the angles. Edge reads VICESIMO SEPTIMO. Designed by John Roettier. The elephant symbol indicates that the source of gold had been imported from the Africa Company. Spink 3329. CC Ref # EMG-54. Rose toning in legend, good Very Fine.

1677, King Charles II, gold 5 guineas. First laureate bust right. Rv. Crowned cruciform shields with sceptres in the angles. Edge reads VICESIMO NONO. Designed by John Roettier. Spink 3328. CC Ref # EMG-55. Very Fine.

Queen Anne, 1702 to 1714

1711 Queen Anne Half Gold Guinea, Spink 3575, An exceptionally nice example of a 1711 half guinea with much brilliance. To prevent fraudulent conversion of silver coins gold coins of previous reigns had used an undraped bust of the monarch. This was considered inappropriate for Queen Anne. As a result many sixpences were gilded, engraved with sceptres and passed off as half guineas. Unlike the guinea the half guinea only has one reverse design. Slight weakness in the centre on the reverse otherwise a very nice example. CC Ref # EMG-46, aUNC SOLD

1713 Queen Anne Gold Guinea, Spink 3574, An exceptionally nice example of a 1713 guinea. Bust of Queen Anne as directed in a warrant dated 30 June 1702, which called for the addition of a dress. The reverse continued the cruciform shields theme, but the lion of Nassau was replaced by a rose, and susequently by a Star of the Order of the Garter, following the Union of Scotland and England. Probably engraved by John Croker assisted by Samuel Bull. CC Ref # EMG-47, aUNC SOLD

King George I, 1714 to 1727

1715 King George I Gold Guinea, Spink 3630, The second head of George I was introduced in 1715. A third head was introduced the same year, a new design with less profusion of hair. A total of five obverse portraits were made to produce guineas in this reaign. This coin has the third bust design. Rare coin. CC Ref # EMG-48, aVF/VF

1717 King George I Five Gold Guineas, Spink 3626. This series uses an obverse by John Croker and a reverse by J R Ochs, senior. Both sides of the coin bear the long abbreviated Hanoverian titles of the king. The portrait is similar to that on the crown except the neck is bare. In December 1717 a Proclamation reduced the value of the guinea to 21 shillings. The edge inscription has an error - inverted D in DECVS - see picture. CC Ref # EMG-49, gVF SOLD

King George III, 1762 to 1813

1784 King George III Gold Guinea, Spink 3728, George III reigned for 60 years. No fewer than six different portraits of the monarch were used. In 1774 almost 20 million worn guineas of William III and Anne were melted down and recoined as guineas and half guineas. This coin bears the fourth bust design. Nice fault free example. CC Ref # EMG-50, gVF

1803 King George III Third Gold Guinea, Spink 3739. The third guinea is unique amongst the gold coinage in being the only denomination struck entirely within a single reign. Issued between 1800 to 1811. This is the first type, designed and engraved by Lewis Pingo. CC Ref # EMG-44, gVF

1803 King George III Half Gold Guinea, Spink 3736. Minted in a period - 1800 to 1811 - when only half and third guineas were issued. In 1801, the king relinquished his claim to the French throne so the reverse legend had to be altered in 1801, and at the same time the Shield in Garter design was adopted. Sixth laureate head on the obverse. Very nice example CC Ref # EMG-51, gVF/aEF, Price 300 GBP SOLD");

1818 King George III Half Gold Sovereign, Spink 3786. With the great recoinage, the half sovereign was struck to accompany the sovereign piece and became the smallest gold coin in regular use. The workmanship and striking was not quite up to the standard of the sovereign. The coin was more extensively used and turns up in worn condition more often than the sovereign. Obverse design by Benedetto Pistrucci. Reverse was engraved by William Wyon. CC Ref # EMG-42, gF

King William IV, 1830 to 1837

1834 King William IV, Half Gold Sovereign, Spink 3830, One of the most interesting denominations of this short reign of William IV. The issue of 1834 was produced on a small flan. Thereafter the flan was increased in size. The small flan was not popular and some of the 1834 issue was recoined in 1835 into pieces of normal size. The obverse dies were engraved by W Wyon. This is a particularly crisp clean example. CC Ref # EMG-52, EF

1843 Queen Victoria Shield Back Gold Sovereign, Spink 3852, The Victorian Gold Sovereign is one of the most important and popular series in the world. Curiously under-researched, because few people collect the sovereign by date. Varieties within the series are largely unknown to the average collector. Gold sovereigns were minted for almost every year of Victoria's reign. Three mints in Australia, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth as well as the Royal Mint participated in production. The young head design was by William Wyon The shield design was possibly the work of Johann Baptiste Merlen, while the St George and dragon reverse was originally by Pistrucci, but engraved by other people.
